Salt Lake County is currently developing a general plan to guide future development in and around the Oquirrhs. Several virtual open house meetings have been announced for March.

A recent survey of residents conducted as part of the planning process found the highest support for those areas within the plan dealing with recreation and the environment. The Oquirrh Foundation wants to ensure residents voices are heard and the County prioritizes the preservation of natural areas such as Coon Canyon/Soldier Flat and Harker Canyon from development. These areas could provide west side residents with outdoor recreation opportunities that are currently severely lacking. The canyons of the Northern Oquirrhs that have not seen mining activity also provide critical habitat for wildlife. Coon Canyon also contains native cultural sites that should be protected. The current draft of the West Bench General plan builds on prior planning efforts that have slated some of these important areas for future destructive development.

We encourage anyone interested in the future of the Oquirrhs to participate in the planned meetings and contact members of the Salt Lake County Council to ensure your voice is heard in the process. Their contact info can be found here: https://slco.org/council/
