Salt Lake County is currently working on a general plan for the West Bench including the Oquirrh Mountains that lie within the County boundaries. As part of the planning process the County conducted a survey of residents and stakeholders, asking for feedback on proposed vision statements for the West Bench. A summary of the survey results has just been released.

The survey presented several different vision statements covering housing, infrastructure, recreation, and other issues. The statements were developed by County staff along with the plan steering committee, and respondents were asked how closely they agreed with the statements and given the option to comment. The 3,876 individual comments were not released. We have requested the full survey data to review.

They survey appears to show strong support for preserving open space within and surrounding the Oquirrhs. Some of the most common responses identified by the survey included conservation of natural lands, natural lands preservation, more open space with housing, habitat preservation, trails, parks, and additional access to the Oquirrh Mountains.

The Oquirrh Foundation will continue to monitor and participate in the study process to ensure the West Bench plan prioritizes the preservation of the wild and open space that currently exists in the Oquirrhs and West Bench. This general plan will set the tone for future development in the area. We hope County leaders will take this opportunity to preserve the Oquirrhs for future generations.
